Since 2011 Cycle Away has facilitated bicycle skills training for primary schools, under the auspices of the Brisbane City Council Active School Travel Program.
The students participating in the program range in age from 9 to 12 years. Some have previous cycling experience and a small minority have never ridden a bicycle before.
Students receive instruction in checking their bicycle before each ride, correct fitting of helmets, Queensland road rules relating to cyclists, hand signals for turning, straight line riding, riding in close company, scanning, correct cornering techniques and other relevant cycling skills. The course is run in a fun environment to assist with skill retention and to cater for the different abilities and personalities of the students.
Feedback from the students is very encouraging, ranging from “it was epic” to “I feel safer riding on the road and I know how to check for cars”.
Let us put a program together to suit your school.
